2,7-Dimethyloctane

Description:
2,7-Dimethyloctane is an organic compound classified as an alkane, specifically a branched-chain hydrocarbon. Its molecular formula is C10H22, indicating it consists of ten carbon atoms and twenty-two hydrogen atoms. This compound features two methyl groups attached to the octane backbone at the 2nd and 7th carbon positions, contributing to its branched structure. 2,7-Dimethyloctane is a colorless liquid at room temperature and is typically insoluble in water due to its nonpolar nature, but it is soluble in organic solvents. It has a relatively high boiling point compared to straight-chain alkanes of similar molecular weight, which is a characteristic of branched alkanes due to their lower surface area and reduced van der Waals forces. This compound is primarily used in research and industrial applications, including as a reference standard in gas chromatography. Its properties make it relevant in studies related to fuel performance and hydrocarbon behavior in various chemical processes.
