Mesitylene

Description:
Mesitylene, also known as 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, is an aromatic hydrocarbon characterized by its three methyl groups attached to a benzene ring at the 1, 3, and 5 positions. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature with a sweet, aromatic odor. Mesitylene is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. Its molecular formula is C9H12, and it has a relatively low boiling point compared to other aromatic compounds, making it volatile. Mesitylene is primarily used as a solvent in chemical reactions and as a precursor in the synthesis of various chemicals, including pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. It is also utilized in the production of certain polymers and as a standard in gas chromatography. While mesitylene is considered to have low toxicity, it should still be handled with care due to its flammable nature and potential health effects upon prolonged exposure.
