It binds to the opioid receptors in the brain, spinal cord, and other organs, reducing pain by blocking the transmission of pain signals. Methadone is used medically as a painkiller and as a treatment for opiate addiction. The drug may also be used to treat chronic pain not caused by cancer or other diseases that are resistant to treatment with other medications. Methadone is usually administered orally but can also be given intravenously or intramuscularly. Methadone hydrochloride is a long-acting form of methadone that is taken orally and has a half-life of approximately 24 hours.
