Isoquinoline-5-sulfonamide is an inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC) and has been shown to be effective in preventing oxidative injury. It inhibits PKC by binding to the ATP site, which prevents the phosphorylation of proteins. Isoquinoline-5-sulfonamide also inhibits other protein kinases, including protein kinase A and B and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II. This drug has been shown to reduce neuronal death in cells that are exposed to high levels of water vapor or cytosolic Ca2+. Isoquinoline-5-sulfonamide may also inhibit P2Y receptors, which are involved in pain sensation.
