CAS 111-87-5

:

1-Octanol

Description:
1-Octanol, with the CAS number 111-87-5, is a straight-chain fatty alcohol characterized by its eight-carbon alkyl chain. It is a colorless, viscous liquid with a characteristic fatty odor. 1-Octanol is hydrophobic, meaning it has low solubility in water, but it is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. Its molecular formula is C8H18O, and it features a hydroxyl (-OH) functional group, which imparts some polar characteristics to the molecule. This compound is commonly used as a solvent, in the manufacture of surfactants, and as a flavoring agent in the food industry. Additionally, 1-octanol plays a role in the study of membrane permeability and is often used in partition coefficient studies due to its ability to partition between aqueous and organic phases. Its boiling point is relatively high compared to smaller alcohols, reflecting its larger molecular size, and it is considered to have low toxicity, making it suitable for various applications in both industrial and laboratory settings.

  • 1-Octanol [for Determining Partition Coefficients]

    CAS:
1-Octanol is a nonpolar organic compound that is used as a solvent and as a reagent in biochemical experiments. It is soluble in water and reacts with strong bases such as sodium hydroxide to form the ionic 1-octanolate, which can be determined by titration. 1-Octanol is also used in wastewater treatment and biological sample preparation. In rat liver microsomes, 1-octanol inhibits the oxidation of model compounds by cytochrome P450 enzymes. This effect is attributed to its ability to reduce the surface tension at the air-water interface, thereby minimizing interfacial tension effects on enzyme activity. The partition coefficients for 1-octanol are measured by determining the solubility of this substance in various solvents. These values are obtained experimentally from solubility data obtained from melting points and density measurements or calculated from molecular weight data. 1-Octanol has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on rat liver micro
