6-Hydroxyhexanoic acid

Description:
6-Hydroxyhexanoic acid, with the CAS number 1191-25-9, is a carboxylic acid characterized by the presence of a hydroxyl group (-OH) on the sixth carbon of a hexanoic acid chain. This compound typically appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid or solid, depending on its state and purity. It is soluble in water and organic solvents, which enhances its utility in various chemical applications. The presence of both the carboxylic acid and hydroxyl functional groups allows for versatile reactivity, making it useful in the synthesis of esters, polymers, and other chemical intermediates. Additionally, 6-hydroxyhexanoic acid can participate in hydrogen bonding due to its hydroxyl group, influencing its physical properties such as boiling point and melting point. It is also of interest in biochemical research and potential applications in pharmaceuticals and materials science. Safety precautions should be taken when handling this compound, as with any chemical substance, to avoid irritation or adverse reactions.

  • 6-Hydroxyhexanoic acid

    CAS:

6-Hydroxyhexanoic acid is an organic acid that is produced by the bacterial metabolism of caproic acid. It can be used to produce inorganic acids such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. 6-Hydroxyhexanoic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria at low concentrations. This inhibition may be due to its ability to form an adduct with DNA, which inhibits DNA replication and transcription. 6-Hydroxyhexanoic acid also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting translocation and peptide bond formation. 6-hydroxyhexanoic acid also causes genotoxic effects in vitro and structural analysis has revealed a hydroxyl group on the methyl group on one side of the molecule.
