Filgrastim

Description:
Filgrastim is a recombinant form of human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), primarily used to stimulate the production of neutrophils in patients undergoing chemotherapy or those with certain bone marrow disorders. It is a glycoprotein composed of 175 amino acids and has a molecular weight of approximately 18 kDa. Filgrastim functions by binding to specific receptors on hematopoietic progenitor cells in the bone marrow, promoting their proliferation and differentiation into neutrophils. This action helps to reduce the incidence of infections in patients with neutropenia. The substance is typically administered via subcutaneous injection and has a relatively short half-life, necessitating regular dosing. Filgrastim is generally well-tolerated, though potential side effects may include bone pain, splenic rupture, and allergic reactions. Its use is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to filgrastim or any component of the formulation. Overall, filgrastim plays a crucial role in supportive care for patients with compromised immune systems.
