It is found in the urine of humans and other mammals, but at concentrations that are 10 to 100 times lower than those of testosterone. It is also found in some plants and fungi. 5alpha-Androstan-3-one can be synthesized from cholesterol, or it can be formed by the hydroxylation of testosterone in response to the action of cytochrome P450 enzymes.
