:2-Ethylhexanal
Description:
2-Ethylhexanal is an organic compound classified as an aldehyde, characterized by its straight-chain structure with a six-carbon backbone and an ethyl group at the second carbon. Its molecular formula is C8H16O, and it features a carbonyl group (C=O) at one end of the chain, which is typical of aldehydes. This compound is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a distinctive, pleasant odor, often described as fruity or floral. It is moderately soluble in water but more soluble in organic solvents, reflecting its hydrophobic nature due to the long hydrocarbon chain. 2-Ethylhexanal is used in various applications, including as an intermediate in the synthesis of plasticizers, surfactants, and other chemical products. It is also utilized in the fragrance industry. Safety considerations include its potential to cause irritation upon contact with skin or eyes, and it should be handled with appropriate precautions in a well-ventilated area.

CAS:
2-Ethylhexanal is a colorless gas with a pleasant, fruity odor. It is used as an extractant in the polymerase chain reaction. 2-Ethylhexanal reacts with copper(II) chloride to form copper(II) ethylhexanoate, which can be extracted from the reaction mixture with water or other solvents. The reaction mechanism of 2-ethylhexanal with copper(II) chloride involves hydroxylation of the ethyl group by copper(II) ions and subsequent protonation at the more acidic position on the carbon atom adjacent to the hydroxyl group. This results in formation of a carboxylic acid that then reacts with an alcohol to form an ester. The ester formed is volatile and can be removed from solution by distillation or evaporation.
Formula:C8H16OPurity:Min. 95%Molecular weight:128.21 g/mol
