2-Hydroxy-N,N,N,N',N',N'-hexamethyl-1,3-propanediaminiumdiiodide is a natural drug that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. It is an analog of 2-hydroxy-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)ethanol (DHE). The synthesis of 2HMDI involves the reaction of bromoacetaldehyde diethyl acetal with 2HMDI in the presence of LiOH in aqueous solution. The asymmetric synthesis of 2HMDI is achieved by using an enantioselective process. 2HMDI has been shown to be effective against inflammatory bowel disease and other bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
