:Quinupristin-dalfopristin
Description:
Quinupristin-dalfopristin is a combination antibiotic used primarily to treat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, particularly those resistant to other antibiotics. It belongs to the streptogramin class and works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. The compound is a combination of two components: quinupristin, which is a streptogramin A, and dalfopristin, a streptogramin B. Together, they exhibit a synergistic effect, enhancing their antibacterial activity. Quinupristin-dalfopristin is effective against a range of pathogens, including Enterococcus faecium and Staphylococcus aureus, including some strains resistant to methicillin. The drug is typically administered intravenously and is often reserved for serious infections due to its side effects, which can include gastrointestinal disturbances and potential hepatotoxicity. It is important to note that the use of quinupristin-dalfopristin may be limited by the development of resistance and is generally considered when other treatment options are not suitable. As with all antibiotics, appropriate susceptibility testing is recommended to ensure effectiveness against the targeted bacteria.
