:Dihydrostreptomycin
Description:
Dihydrostreptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that is derived from the bacterium Streptomyces griseus. It is primarily used in the treatment of various bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The compound exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis through binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Dihydrostreptomycin is characterized by its relatively low solubility in water, which can influence its pharmacokinetics and bioavailability. It is typically administered via injection due to its poor oral absorption. The substance may cause side effects, including nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, which are common concerns with aminoglycosides. Its chemical structure features multiple amino groups, contributing to its basicity and interaction with bacterial ribosomes. Dihydrostreptomycin is often used in combination with other antibiotics to enhance therapeutic efficacy and reduce the risk of resistance development. As with all antibiotics, appropriate susceptibility testing is recommended to ensure effective treatment.
