:Manganese oxide (MnO2)
Description:
Manganese oxide (MnO2) is a black or brown solid that occurs naturally as the mineral pyrolusite, which is the primary ore of manganese. It is an inorganic compound characterized by its high oxidation state of manganese, where manganese is in the +4 oxidation state. MnO2 is insoluble in water but can dissolve in acids, forming manganese salts. This compound exhibits paramagnetic properties due to the presence of unpaired electrons in its d-orbitals. It is commonly used as a catalyst in various chemical reactions, including the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, and as a pigment in ceramics and glass. Additionally, MnO2 plays a significant role in batteries, particularly in alkaline batteries, where it acts as a depolarizer. The substance is also utilized in the production of other manganese compounds and in wastewater treatment processes. Safety considerations include its potential to cause respiratory irritation upon inhalation and skin irritation upon contact, necessitating appropriate handling measures.

CAS:
Manganese (IV) oxide is a reactive metal that is used in the production of sulfuric acid, fertilizers, and other chemicals. It has been found to have antioxidant effects and can be used for the treatment of oxidative injury. Manganese (IV) oxide has also been shown to have a protective effect on cells against radiation by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and protecting cell membranes from damage. Manganese (IV) oxide nanoparticles are used as a model system for studying brain function, due to their ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Manganese oxides are also used in wastewater treatment, because they react with nitrogen compounds and produce ammonia gas which can be removed by a scrubber.
Formula:MnO2Purity:Min. 95%Molecular weight:86.94 g/mol
