Meglumine antimoniate

Description:
Meglumine antimoniate is a chemical compound primarily used in the treatment of leishmaniasis, a disease caused by protozoan parasites. It is a complex of antimony, which is known for its antiprotozoal properties. The compound is typically presented as a white to off-white powder and is soluble in water, making it suitable for injection. Meglumine antimoniate acts by interfering with the metabolism of the parasites, leading to their death. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of certain enzymes and disruption of cellular processes within the parasite. The compound is often administered in a clinical setting, and its dosage and administration depend on the specific type of leishmaniasis being treated. While generally effective, it may have side effects, including pain at the injection site and potential toxicity, necessitating careful monitoring during treatment. As with any pharmaceutical agent, its use should be guided by healthcare professionals, considering the patient's overall health and specific medical conditions.

  • N-Methylglucamine antimonate

    CAS:

N-Methylglucamine antimonate is a drug that is used to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis. It is not active against the visceral form of the disease. The drug binds to antimony in a 1:1 stoichiometry and inhibits the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the parasite, which prevents DNA replication and transcription. This inhibition leads to cell death and eventual elimination of Leishmania parasites from the host. N-Methylglucamine antimonate is only effective against Leishmania parasites and has no effect on other bacteria or viruses, such as bowel disease. The drug can be given orally or intravenously, but should not be given to patients with bowel diseases because this may lead to intestinal ulceration or perforation.
