It has been shown to catalyze the conversion of acetaldehyde and hydrochloric acid to 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde with dehydrogenation as the main reaction mechanism. This reaction is followed by the addition of persulfate to give dimethyl 3-nitrophthalate sulfoxide, which can then be converted into dimethyl 3-nitrophthalate with boron trifluoride etherate and ammonium persulfate. The anticancer potential of this compound has been demonstrated in vitro using tyrosine kinase as a model enzyme.
