CAS:Gadolinium sulfate is a chemical compound with the formula GdSO4. It is a white solid that dissolves in water, alcohols, and other polar solvents. Gadolinium sulfate has a number of uses in the field of biochemistry and medicine. In cell culture, gadolinium-containing compounds are used to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) for investigating the production of ROS by cells or for determining the effects of ROS on cells. These compounds can be used as an alternative to hydrogen peroxide, which can cause oxidative damage to cells. Gadolinium is also used in pharmaceutical preparations as an agent that reacts with hydrochloric acid to form a soluble complex called gadodiamide. Gadolinium sulfate may also be used as a radioactive contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans because it is more readily taken up by tissues than other comparable agents such as barium sulfate. This property makes it useful for detecting problems with blood flow
