It is an antiviral and anticancer agent that inhibits viral DNA synthesis by competitively inhibiting the activity of thymidylate synthase, which converts dUMP to dTMP. 4',5'-Didehydro-2',5'-dideoxy-2'-fluorouridine also induces apoptosis in neoplastic cells.
