entecavir

Description:
Entecavir is an antiviral medication primarily used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It belongs to the class of nucleoside analogs and functions as a potent inhibitor of HBV replication. The chemical structure of entecavir features a bicyclic guanosine analog, which allows it to effectively compete with the natural substrate for incorporation into viral DNA, thereby disrupting the viral replication process. Entecavir is characterized by its high oral bioavailability and a long half-life, which supports once-daily dosing. It is generally well-tolerated, with common side effects including headache and fatigue. Importantly, entecavir has a low potential for resistance development, making it a preferred choice in the management of HBV. The substance is typically administered in its monophosphate form, which is active against both wild-type and lamivudine-resistant strains of HBV. As with any antiviral therapy, monitoring for liver function and viral load is essential during treatment.
