Besifloxacin

Description:
Besifloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic primarily used in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. It exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, particularly against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including strains resistant to other antibiotics. The chemical structure of besifloxacin features a bicyclic core with a fluorine atom, which enhances its potency and spectrum of activity. It is characterized by its high solubility in water, which facilitates its formulation as an ophthalmic solution for topical application. Besifloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes critical for bacterial DNA replication and repair.
