CAS:Parbendazole is a carbonyl-containing drug that has been used in cancer chemotherapy. It is an anthelmintic drug that has minimal toxicity and has also shown to inhibit the growth of leukemic stem cells. Parbendazole inhibits the synthesis of ATP by targeting the mitochondrial electron transport chain. It binds to the cytochrome c1-c6 complex, which prevents release of electrons from cytochrome c1 to oxygen and leads to inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation. Parbendazole also exhibits inhibitory properties against leukemia stem cells, which may be due to its ability to decrease the expression of CD133 on these cells.
