21H,23H-Porphine-2,18-dipropanoic acid, 7,12-bis(1-hydroxyethyl)-3,8,13,17-tetramethyl-

Description:
The chemical substance known as "21H,23H-Porphine-2,18-dipropanoic acid, 7,12-bis(1-hydroxyethyl)-3,8,13,17-tetramethyl-" with CAS number 14459-29-1 is a complex porphyrin derivative. Porphyrins are characterized by their large, planar, cyclic structures composed of four pyrrole rings interconnected by methine bridges, which contribute to their ability to coordinate metal ions, making them significant in biological systems, particularly in hemoglobin and chlorophyll. This specific compound features multiple functional groups, including propanoic acid and hydroxyethyl substituents, which enhance its solubility and reactivity. The presence of tetramethyl groups indicates a degree of steric hindrance, potentially influencing its interactions and stability. Such porphyrin derivatives are often studied for their applications in photodynamic therapy, as well as in the development of sensors and catalysts due to their unique electronic properties. Overall, this compound exemplifies the intricate relationship between structure and function in porphyrin chemistry.

  • Haematoporphyrin

    CAS:
Haematoporphyrin is a photosensitizing compound derived from heme, which has been modified to enhance its photophysical properties. It interacts with biological tissues through a mechanism involving the production of reactive oxygen species when activated by light of a specific wavelength. This property makes haematoporphyrin particularly effective in photodynamic therapy (PDT).

    CAS:

Applications Hematoporphyrin (Photodyn, Sensibion) is a porphyrin prepared from hemin. It is a derivative of protoporphyrin IX, where the two vinyl groups have been hydrated (coverted to alcohols). It is used as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy. Acetylation of hematoporphyrin followed by hydrolysis of the product of that reaction affords a mixture called hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD), which is also used in photodynamic therapy. Hematoporphyrin has also been used as an antidepressant and antipsychotic since the 1920s.
