4-(6-hydroxynaphthalen-2-yl)benzene-1,2-diol ((6HNAB)) is a synthetic small molecule with potent and selective inhibitory activity against the enzyme protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). PTP1B is an enzyme that inactivates a number of signaling molecules including insulin, leptin, and the peptide hormone ghrelin. This means that 6HNAB can be used to treat diabetes and obesity by regulating blood sugar levels and appetite. 6HNAB has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on activated T cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of IL-17A.
