CAS:4-(4-Chlorobenzoyl)pyridine is a reactive compound that has been shown to kill bacterial cells by irradiation. This compound binds to the bacterial membrane, and when irradiated, it causes the release of protons from within the cell. This leads to the disruption of the proton gradient and an influx of water into the cell. The increase in water disrupts protein synthesis and causes cell death. 4-(4-Chlorobenzoyl)pyridine has been shown to be effective against gram-negative bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but not against gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes or Enterococcus faecalis.
