2-(1-Benzofuran-2-yl)-1H-imidazole is a homologous compound that inhibits the synthesis of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in cancer cells. It binds to the hormone hCG and prevents it from binding to its receptor. This leads to the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, but not normal cell growth. The drug has been shown to be effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus faecalis, which are bacteria that cause pneumonia and urinary tract infections respectively. 2-(1-Benzofuran-2-yl)-1H-imidazole also causes death of cancer cells by preventing replication of DNA and RNA.
