Sulfuric acid monododecyl ester sodium salt

Description:
Sulfuric acid monododecyl ester sodium salt, commonly known as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), is an anionic surfactant widely used in various applications, including detergents, emulsifiers, and laboratory reagents. It is characterized by its long hydrophobic dodecyl chain, which consists of twelve carbon atoms, and a hydrophilic sulfate group that imparts its surfactant properties. SDS is soluble in water and exhibits excellent foaming and wetting capabilities, making it effective in reducing surface tension. It is often utilized in biochemical and molecular biology applications, such as protein denaturation and gel electrophoresis, due to its ability to impart a negative charge to proteins, facilitating their separation based on size. Additionally, SDS is known for its ability to form micelles, which can encapsulate hydrophobic substances, enhancing their solubility in aqueous solutions. While generally regarded as safe for laboratory use, it can be irritating to skin and eyes, necessitating appropriate safety precautions during handling.
