Description:
Ertapenem is a broad-spectrum, beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the carbapenem class, which is known for its effectiveness against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is characterized by its stability against many beta-lactamases, making it a valuable option for treating infections caused by resistant organisms. Ertapenem is typically administered via intravenous or intramuscular routes and has a relatively long half-life, allowing for once-daily dosing. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death. Ertapenem is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and is often used in the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and community-acquired pneumonia. However, it is not effective against certain organisms, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter species. As with all antibiotics, the use of ertapenem should be guided by susceptibility testing to minimize the risk of resistance development.
