3,3-Dimethyl-1,2,4-butanetriol

Description:
3,3-Dimethyl-1,2,4-butanetriol is an organic compound characterized by its three hydroxyl (-OH) groups, which classify it as a triol. This compound features a branched carbon chain with two methyl groups attached to the central carbon, contributing to its unique structure and properties. It is a colorless, viscous liquid at room temperature and is soluble in water due to the presence of multiple hydroxyl groups, which enhance its hydrophilicity. The presence of these functional groups also suggests that it may participate in hydrogen bonding, influencing its boiling point and reactivity. 3,3-Dimethyl-1,2,4-butanetriol can be used in various applications, including as a potential intermediate in organic synthesis and in the formulation of certain chemical products. Its stability and reactivity can vary depending on the conditions, making it a subject of interest in both industrial and research settings. Safety data should be consulted for handling and storage, as with any chemical substance.
