Cdp-star is a chemiluminescent substrate that can be used to measure the activity of HDACs. Cdp-star has been shown to inhibit the phosphatase activity of these enzymes, which are involved in neuronal function and morphology. It has also been shown to induce apoptosis by activating the pro-inflammatory cytokine pathway. Cdp-star can be used to detect neuronal death in cell culture and tissue cultures and is found in mammalian cells as well. This substrate has been shown to have an effect on plasma glucose levels, as well as on fatty acid synthesis pathways in placental alkaline phosphatase.
