It has the molecular formula of CHN and a molecular weight of 115.2 g/mol. 2-Amino-3-methylpyridine has an asymmetric carbon atom, so it is chiral and can be found in two different forms, enantiomers. The intermolecular hydrogen bond between nitrogen atoms is responsible for the high melting point of -40°C. The coordination geometry of group P2 is pyramidal with the nitrogen atom at the apex and two hydrogen atoms bonded to each other on either side of the nitrogen atom at 120° angles. X ray crystal structures have shown that 2-amino-3-methylpyridine exists as a molecule with an acylation reaction mechanism and intramolecular hydrogen bonding.
