Amino acid catabolism, in particular the cleavage of peptides by proteolytic enzymes, is a central process in cellular metabolism. Amino acid catabolism is regulated by a number of different enzymes, including aminopeptidases. 3-(4-Nitrophenyl)propanoic acid inhibits the activity of these enzymes and thereby prevents the degradation of amino acids.
