2,3,7,8-Tetrachloro-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) is a model system for the study of chemical carcinogenesis. It is an environmental pollutant that has been shown to cause liver lesions in both experimental animals and humans. 2,3,7,8-TCDD has been shown to cause maternal blood enzyme activities and fetal malformations in animals. Biological properties of this substance include mitochondrial membrane potential disruption and hepatic steatosis induction.
