The molecule is soluble in water, but not in organic solvents. 3-Mercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt reacts with hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen gas and sodium chloride. This molecule also has photochemical properties and can be used to clean surfaces. The reaction solution of 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt is blue and when added to a plasma mass spectrometry, it produces peaks at m/z = 143 (CCl), m/z = 137 (C), m/z = 111 (Cl), m/z = 103 (H), m/z = 97 (N). Structural analysis found that 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid sodium salt contains two rings with six carbon atoms each.
