DTPA-BSA is a gadolinium chelate that has been modified to allow the uptake of the metal into cells. DTPA-BSA (Gd) is not active in its own right but can be used as a diagnostic agent for tumors or other diseased tissues. The uptake of DTPA-BSA (Gd) enhances MRI images, making it possible to see cancers or other diseased tissue. DTPA-BSA (Gd) binds to cell membranes and enters cells by endocytosis. Cells that have taken up DTPA-BSA (Gd) are then treated with gadolinium ions, which accumulate inside the cells and produce contrast enhancement on MRI images. This technique is useful in diagnosing tumors or other diseased tissues.
