This inhibition prevents the conversion of L-arginine to urea and ornithine, which are essential for bacterial growth. L-Arg has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on a mutant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which was resistant to ertapenem. The IC50 value of L-Arg was found to be 2.5 mM, with an EC50 value of 10 μM at 37°C in human liver cells.
