Phenol, 4-chloro-2-methyl-5-nitro-

Description:
Phenol, 4-chloro-2-methyl-5-nitro- is an organic compound characterized by the presence of a phenolic hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to a benzene ring that also features a chlorine atom, a methyl group, and a nitro group. This compound is classified as a chlorinated nitrophenol, which indicates the presence of both chlorine and nitro functional groups on the aromatic ring. The chlorine atom is located at the para position relative to the hydroxyl group, while the methyl and nitro groups are positioned at the ortho and meta positions, respectively. This specific arrangement influences its chemical reactivity and physical properties, such as solubility and boiling point. Phenol derivatives often exhibit antibacterial and antifungal properties, making them of interest in various applications, including pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Additionally, the presence of the nitro group can enhance the compound's reactivity, making it useful in synthetic organic chemistry. Safety precautions are necessary when handling this compound due to its potential toxicity and environmental impact.

    CAS:

4-Chloro-2-methyl-5-nitrophenol is a white solid with an alkaline reaction. It is used in the production of sulfonated dyes, as well as in the manufacture of certain drugs and pesticides. 4-Chloro-2-methyl-5-nitrophenol can be made industrially by the elimination of toluene under acidic conditions. This product also reacts with nitric acid to form a radical intermediate that adds to a phenyl group, forming a nitro group at position 2 on the ring structure, yielding 4-(2'-methylpropyl)-phenylamine. This compound can also be made by reacting 2,4,5-trichlorophenol with phosphorus pentachloride or thionyl chloride. The resulting chlorinated compound is then oxidized to produce 4-(2'-methylpropyl)-phenylamine and HCl gas.
