2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-2-methylpropanoic acid

Description:
2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)-2-methylpropanoic acid, commonly known as dicamba, is a systemic herbicide used primarily for controlling broadleaf weeds in various crops. It belongs to the class of benzoic acid derivatives and features a dichlorophenoxy group, which enhances its herbicidal activity. The compound is characterized by its relatively low solubility in water, but it is more soluble in organic solvents, which aids in its application. Dicamba acts by mimicking the natural plant hormone auxin, leading to uncontrolled growth and eventual plant death in susceptible species. It is typically applied post-emergence and is effective in a range of agricultural settings. The substance has a moderate toxicity profile, and its environmental persistence can lead to concerns regarding off-target effects, particularly in sensitive crops. As with many herbicides, proper application and adherence to safety guidelines are essential to minimize risks to non-target organisms and the environment.

  • 2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)-2-methylpropanoic acid

    CAS:

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid is a plant growth regulator that inhibits the transfer of auxin from the shoot to the root. It does this by preventing synthesis of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and its conversion to 2,4-dichlorophenoxypropionic acid (2,4-DP). The 2,4-D then binds to the auxin transport proteins in the plasma membrane and prevents their passage through the cell wall. The mechanism of action of 2,4-D is not well understood but it is thought that it may inhibit or interfere with indoleacetic acid production or metabolism. Auxins are also mediators of plant physiology and play a role in many processes such as phototropism and phytochrome sensitivity.
2,4-D has been shown to block photosynthesis and respiration in plants by inhibiting chlorophyll synthesis.
