It is also used in cancer research to study the effects of acidic conditions on cancer cells. 2-pyridylethylmercaptan has been shown to be effective in the treatment of myeloma, leukemia, and breast cancer when administered orally. It binds to thiol groups on proteins and forms a covalent bond with sulfur atoms.
