It is an inhibitor of the enzyme synthetase and has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on cancer cell viability in vitro. 7-Bromo-2,3-dioxoindoline inhibits the production of cancerous cells by interfering with their ability to synthesize DNA, which is necessary for cell division. This inhibition may be due to its ability to form intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions with the amine group on the enzyme synthetase. 7-Bromo-2,3-dioxoindoline has also been shown to block the synthesis of 5-chloroisatin, one of its reaction products.
