CAS:2-Bromo-3-methylphenol is a chemical with the molecular formula CHBrO. It is a white solid that melts at -4°C. 2-Bromo-3-methylphenol is used in organic synthesis as an intermediate for the preparation of trifluoroacetic acid, hydrochloric acid, and other organic compounds. It can be prepared by reacting methyl phenol with bromine and hydrochloric acid in the presence of copper. The reaction produces 2,2′,2″-(1,2,2-triethoxyethane)trifluoroacetic acid. This process has been shown to have high yield and to be environmentally friendly because it does not produce chlorinated byproducts. 2-Bromo-3-methylphenol can also be synthesized from methyl phenol and bromine using copper chloride in polyphosphoric acid or hydrogenated trifluoroacetic acid.
