:Benzenemethanol, 4-methyl-, 1-acetate
Description:
Benzenemethanol, 4-methyl-, 1-acetate, commonly known as p-tolyl acetate, is an organic compound characterized by its aromatic structure and ester functional group. It features a benzene ring substituted with a methyl group at the para position and an acetate group. This compound is typically a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a sweet, fruity odor, making it useful in the fragrance and flavoring industries. Its molecular formula reflects the presence of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, contributing to its relatively low polarity. p-Tolyl acetate is soluble in organic solvents but has limited solubility in water. It is often used as a solvent in various chemical reactions and as an intermediate in the synthesis of other organic compounds. Additionally, it exhibits moderate volatility and can be flammable, necessitating careful handling and storage. As with many esters, it may undergo hydrolysis in the presence of water, reverting to its corresponding alcohol and acid. Overall, p-tolyl acetate is valued for its aromatic properties and versatility in chemical applications.

CAS:
4-Methylbenzyl acetate is a monocarboxylic acid that is an oxidation product of benzyl esters. It has been found to be a suitable catalyst for the oxidation of wastewater containing monocarboxylic acids, including acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid. The catalytic mechanism of 4-methylbenzyl acetate was found to be an acylation reaction in which the carboxyl group of 4-methylbenzyl acetate acts as an acylating agent with the hydrogen atom of the substrate. The reaction mechanism for this process is similar to that for other types of carboxylic acids, such as propionate and butyrate. 4-Methylbenzyl acetate also has functional groups that allow it to act as both a base and a nucleophile in addition to its ability to act as an acylating agent.
Formula:C10H12O2Purity:Min. 95%Molecular weight:164.2 g/mol
