Biotin is a coenzyme that plays an important role in the metabolism of fat and protein. Biotin is required for the synthesis of fatty acids and for the production of acetyl-coenzyme A from pyruvate. It also participates in gluconeogenesis, the conversion of pyruvate to glucose, and in cholesterol synthesis. Biotin deficiency may lead to skin rash, hair loss, impaired growth, or nerve degeneration. Biotin is a ligand for certain receptors such as the retinoic acid receptor and thyroid hormone receptor. In addition to its role as a ligand, biotin has been shown to act as an activator for some ion channels such as calcium channels.
