CAS 2316-64-5
:5-Bromo-2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol
Description:
5-Bromo-2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, with the CAS number 2316-64-5, is an organic compound characterized by the presence of a bromine atom and a hydroxyl group on a benzyl alcohol framework. This compound features a bromine substituent at the 5-position and a hydroxyl group at the 2-position of the benzene ring, which contributes to its reactivity and solubility in polar solvents. It typically appears as a white to off-white solid or crystalline substance. The hydroxyl group imparts alcohol characteristics, making it capable of forming hydrogen bonds, which enhances its solubility in water and other polar solvents. Additionally, the bromine atom can participate in various chemical reactions, such as nucleophilic substitutions or coupling reactions, making this compound useful in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Its unique structure may also influence its biological activity, potentially serving as a precursor in the development of pharmaceuticals or agrochemicals. As with many brominated compounds, safety precautions should be taken due to potential toxicity and environmental concerns.

CAS:
5-Bromo-2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (5-BrABA) is a diagnostic agent that is used to detect microbial infections. It has been shown to be useful as an anti-infective agent in the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases, such as choroidal neovascularization. 5-BrABA is a cell permeable compound that binds to target tissue and accumulates at the site of infection. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of ophthalmic bacteria, including Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. 5-BrABA has also been shown to be biocompatible with human retinal pigment epithelial cells and does not induce any detectable toxicity or cytotoxicity in these cells after 24 hours exposure.
Formula:C7H7BrO2Purity:Min. 98 Area-%Color and Shape:PowderMolecular weight:203.03 g/mol4-Bromo-2-(hydroxymethyl)phenol
