CAS:<p>7-Hydroxyindole is a biochemical that is produced by wild-type strains of Escherichia coli. It has been shown to inhibit the action of an efflux pump, which is a protein that pumps drugs and other foreign substances out of the cell. The alkoxy radical reacts with 7-hydroxyindole to form a hydroperoxide intermediate. This intermediate then reacts with molecular oxygen to form hydrogen peroxide, which may be responsible for the antimicrobial activity of 7-hydoxyindole.
