Allocholic acid is a hydroxylated derivative of allo-inositol. It has been shown to inhibit the formation of peptide hormones and is used in the treatment of cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis. Allocholic acid also inhibits molecules that inhibit enzymes, such as phosphodiesterase and lipase, which are involved in the breakdown of fat. The biological sample preparation methods have been optimized for the extraction of allocholic acid from human feces. The optimum pH for allocholic acid is 4.5-5.0.
