    <p>Methanesulphonyl acetic acid is a synthetic compound that is structurally related to the neurotransmitter serotonin. It was developed as an antibacterial agent in the late 1950s and early 1960s, but was never marketed because of its adverse effects on 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors, which are involved in depression and psychotic disorders. Methanesulphonyl acetic acid has been shown to inhibit receptor activity for 5-HT2A receptors, which may be due to its structural similarity with serotonin.
