:Cerberin
Description:
Cerberin is a toxic cardiac glycoside derived from the plant species Cerbera odollam, commonly known as the suicide tree. It is characterized by its complex structure, which includes a steroid nucleus and a sugar moiety, typical of glycosides. Cerberin exhibits potent pharmacological effects, primarily affecting the heart by inhibiting the Na+/K+ ATPase enzyme, leading to increased intracellular sodium and calcium levels, which can result in enhanced cardiac contractility. However, this compound is highly toxic and can lead to severe cardiac arrhythmias and potentially fatal outcomes if ingested. Its mechanism of action is similar to that of other cardiac glycosides, such as digoxin, but with a narrower therapeutic window and higher toxicity. Due to its dangerous nature, cerberin is not used therapeutically and is primarily of interest in toxicology and pharmacology studies. Safety precautions are essential when handling this substance, given its lethal potential.
