:Phenyl β-D-galactopyranoside
Description:
Phenyl β-D-galactopyranoside is a glycoside compound characterized by its structure, which consists of a phenyl group attached to a β-D-galactopyranoside moiety. This compound is typically a white to off-white solid and is soluble in water and organic solvents, making it useful in various biochemical applications. It is commonly employed as a substrate in enzymatic assays, particularly for the detection of galactosidase activity, as it can be hydrolyzed by this enzyme to release phenol. The compound is also utilized in studies related to carbohydrate chemistry and glycosylation processes. Its molecular formula reflects the presence of multiple hydroxyl groups, contributing to its reactivity and interaction with other biomolecules. Additionally, Phenyl β-D-galactopyranoside is of interest in research involving cell signaling and carbohydrate recognition, as it can mimic natural substrates in biological systems. Safety data indicates that, while it is generally considered low in toxicity, standard laboratory precautions should be observed when handling this compound.
