:C.I. Direct Blue 218
Description:
C.I. Direct Blue 218, with the CAS number 28407-37-6, is a synthetic dye primarily used in the textile industry for dyeing cellulose fibers, such as cotton and rayon. It belongs to the class of direct dyes, which can be applied directly to fabrics without the need for a mordant. This dye is characterized by its deep blue color and good lightfastness, making it suitable for various applications, including paper and leather. Chemically, it is an azo dye, which means it contains one or more azo groups (-N=N-) that contribute to its color properties. C.I. Direct Blue 218 is soluble in water, allowing for easy application in dyeing processes. However, like many synthetic dyes, it may pose environmental concerns due to its potential toxicity and persistence in the environment. Safety data sheets recommend handling it with care, as it may cause irritation upon contact with skin or eyes. Overall, C.I. Direct Blue 218 is valued for its vibrant hue and versatility in dyeing applications.

CAS:
Direct blue 218 is a glycol ether dye that is used in the textile industry and as a food coloring agent. It has been shown to cause nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity as well as cancer in rats. Direct blue 218 is absorbed by the target tissues, which include the ovary cells, liver cells, and kidney cells. This dye has been shown to inhibit catecholamine release from the adrenal gland in vitro assays and increase the number of mitotic figures in rat liver cells chronically exposed to this dye. Direct blue 218 also contains nitrogen atoms that can form a copper complex with an electron-donating group (e.g., hydroxyl groups). The copper complex increases its stability, leading to increased genotoxic effects.
Formula:C32H16Cu2N6Na4O16S4Color and Shape:Blue PowderMolecular weight:1,087.82 g/mol
