It is formed by the reaction of naphthalene and phthalic anhydride in the presence of oxygen and light. 2-Formylcinnamic acid has been shown to be mediated by lysosomes in human neutrophils, which may be due to its ability to induce oxidative stress. This chemical also has been shown to produce particle formation when exposed to light, as demonstrated using a spectrometer.
