It has been shown to be an effective treatment for wastewater containing hydrochloric acid and organic solvents. The reaction between HMMI and the acids in wastewater forms a complex that prevents the corrosion of metal surfaces. HMMI can be synthesized by reacting aesculus with formaldehyde in an organic solvent, such as acetone or chloroform, at room temperature.
